I'm sitting at a computer in the athena cluster on the ground floor of our dorm and the air conditioner is right behind this very computer, so the right half of my body is slightly frigid.
My first week's load of laundry is in the wash [try saying that out loud three times fast: I definitely started to type "waundry"]. It's two loads, actually, which is kind of sad. Not only because it cost me an extra 75 cents, but also because I managed to go through so much clothing in a week.
Actually, I've decided I have a lovely fashion sense. Everyone here is like, "wow, everything you wear is interesting!" which now that I think about it may not be a compliment. But everyone liked my pink ruffly skirt and the pink dress I wore yesterday. And people are probably starting to think I only own pink clothes. But I'm actually wearing red, white, and blue today [for fun, not because I love America], so obviously that's not true. By the way, we went to the Boston Pops rehearsal concert last night and I realised there are a lot of songs about America. Having never lived in another country, I wouldn't know, but it seems like other countries aren't half as self-obsessed. Can someone who doesn't live in the U.S. confirm/deny this? How many patriotic songs can you name?
But anyway, on to the important stuff. Spider-Man! Spider-Man! Does whatever a spider can! I really enjoyed the new movie. And Marisa! Did you know Alfred Molina is Doc Ock? I was like wow, he looks awfully familiar. And then he started talking about free energy for everyone, and I was like, hmm, Coffee and Cigarettes much? And that Tobey Maguire fellow is awfully adorable. Not as completely sexy as Willem Dafoe, but then, who is? ;) I totally don't see the James-Franco-is-hot! thing, though. I must admit, however, that I was duly impressed by the red satin [?] lining of his suit jacket when he was being dangled over the side of the building. The boy can dress.
And one last note before I go check on my laundry. Okay, no, more than one.
On Friday we attended the MIT Anime Club's "patriotic showing" of some anime. First was three episodes of Saber Marionette J, which did not impress me. However, it was far more interesting than the next movie we watched, Silent Service, which was about a submarine. Have I mentioned how much I hate submarine movies? Because I do. Even Japanese animated submarine movies.
The next choice more than made up for it, though. Have y'all heard of Gravitation? It's about a band trying to make it, but it's really just an excuse for bishonen and yaoi. The two main characters are this little pink-haired boy who looks about ten, but who is probably legal, and this incredibly sexy blond writer. In the opening credits I was like, "Dude, he's hot!" and Annie [my roommate] and Katharine [a Texan who is tolly cool] were like ". . . he's an animated character." So they decided they're going to draw me a boyfriend because I'm attracted to anime boys. Psh to them! He seriously was hot.
And yesterday I went a little overboard on MIT merchandise-purchasing in the Coop. The idea of buying MIT clothing before I've applied/been accepted kind of makes me feel like it'll jinx it, but because I'm doing this program, I feel like I sort of have an excuse. Besides, they were five dollars each in the sale box. So I bought these totally cute pajama bottoms with a groovy flower pattern and "MIT" in a really cute yellow font on them," a sporty MIT skirt that says "beavers" on the waistband when you fold it over [beavers are nature's engineers! ;)], and MIT briefs. Yeah. >.> <.<

Posted by: Dee on 04.07.04 14:37yeah americans are kind of gross with their cockiness and their umpteen thousand songs. right now i'm watching this pops concert on TV i swear in the last two minutes they've played 9 different songs. it's a medley but you know.
i know from being in italy for a month they aren't crazy with a billion songs. but when the soccer team won, rome was covered in red and gold streamers and there was grafiti (sp?) of wolf heads everywhere, so...i'm going off on a tangent
Posted by: melissa on 04.07.04 22:23I was in Norway for their national holiday and they were definately more "omfg we rule" than here on 4th of July.
Posted by: Allan on 05.07.04 01:30Oh yeah, the Russians had there own band on board there destroyer that played when they were pulling in. Pretty gung-ho.
And we really are the best country. If a country has good food, we steal it. Good music? It's ours. Beautiful people? They immigrate. Everyone comes here for education. We have room to walk down sidewalks! We have toliets instead of troughs! And our urinals have a parabolic shape so they don't splatter--so we're shitting all over Europe.

Posted by: eleanour on 05.07.04 12:42My fashion sense, is like no fashion sense. Laundry isn't fun when you have to pay for it. Well, laundry isnt really a fun arena to begin with, but paying with quarters definitely puts a bigger dent in things. I was going to write something else, but I cant remember. Im forgetting things a lot today ... Hm...
