Got mail from Randolph-Macon Woman's College and Washington University in St. Louis today. Have been getting daily e-mails from colleges I've mostly never heard of since stupidly put e-mail address on PSAT thing.
Am so nervous about my future. The R-M Women's College pamphlet had a list of majors and when reading it, I realised I have no idea what I want to do with my life.
Except become president of the world, that is. And when I make my State of the World Address, I will say, "Please do not clap after every single sentence because the high school students who have to listen to this for school and just want to go to bed do not appreciate it, kthx."
Seriously, though, how did you [yes, YOU] decide where you wanted to go to college and what you wanted to major in? How did you know when you found the right one? If you're not in college already, what colleges are you looking at and why? I'm pretty sure I do not want to go to a single-sex college, and that I'd like to go to a school near a city. [I like cities.] Not sure if I'd prefer a big school or a small school.
Almeda | 29.01.03 17:40 | TrackBackI got the same letters today and am met with the same dilemma.
I'm looking at smaller colleges on the East Coast, like, say Swathmore. However I still have no idea what I want to do with the rest of my life.
Posted by: Neil on 29.01.03 18:35I got the Washington one today too plus the University of Tampa. I want to go to PSU, but so does like everyone else. I know what i want to be when I grow up, I guess I'm better at deciding than you.

Posted by: Colin on 29.01.03 20:24I think I want to be a farmer. No, a farm-hand. Back-breaking work, and all that. I love that. Except the back-breaking. Unless it's just an expression. In which case, I relish it. But the problem with that is, I will have difficulty entertaining my mind. Yet I'll have even more muscle than I do now. So the ladies will entertain my mind for me. But I'll live in the country, so all I'll have to deal with is farmer's daughters (I've seen the pornos; It's all they have out there). That's bound to grow tedious, eventually. No, what I need is a good, intelligent young lady with an amazing personality. Then I can do back-breaking work without breaking my back, have an enjoyable relationship, and be the underappreciated martyr that all farmers/farmhands are.
...You know, you'd think this is the sort of thing I'd write on my blog. But no, I just go and fill up Almeda's comment server, and... *talks long into the night*
Posted by: Ruairi Ó Coileáin on 29.01.03 20:45I got the same two, plus Ithica, and I got U. of Tampa yesterday. How odd. Guess they all have dates when they send them out to the same area. I thought the Women's college looked cool, but I really do want my college experiance to include many hot males.
Posted by: Smith on 29.01.03 21:08Ruari is the poster who gets this week's "kick in the balls" for being the creator of the most annoying comment on Kate's blog today.
As for college:
I didn't care where I went to school because I knew for the field(s) I was interested in a name-brand school wasn't going to be necessary to find employment.
You'll probably have scholarship money squirting out all over your LunaPads (was that too vulgar?) so aim high.
I'd highly recommend going to a school that is near at least one major city. It makes getting your fix of culture much easier.
As for big vs. small (schools), you'll probably have more opportunities for fun extra-curriculars at a larger school but you might have to walk farther to classes.
Also, make sure that there are lots of people you know and like going to the same school because it's impossible to make friends and no one ever gets a good roommate randomly.
Posted by: Yan on 29.01.03 21:12I could list all the colleges I got mail from today, but you really do not want to know. But this I have to say - choose different majors in sophomore and junior years because you may hear from different colleges. I plan on double majoring in English and Anthropology right now. And I gave my mom's email address, so now I have to sort through her email.
The only women's school I want to go to is Smith, but for the most part I'm looking at cities as well. Chicago, New York (though my mom doesn't want me to go there), Boston, and maybe Philly (I know someone who graduated from U of Pennsylvania not long ago, and aside from the neighborhood, he commented on the price of the books because he wanted to buy a chemistry book from their bookstore recently). I was avoiding Philly for awhile, but then I got more mail and...maybe. It's not too far away.
Also, I'm looking at Mount Saint Mary's, but then it's Catholic so you might want to stay away, but I visited over the summer and it seemed to be pretty nice and it's not a bad school, it's only 40-50 minutes away but in another state, and I'm pretty sure I could get in. So, safety school.
And that seems to be pretty long.
Posted by: Britney on 29.01.03 21:35Single-sex college? Oh dear. I know that, like, being a feminist and all, I should agree with you, but guys are great. *shrugs* But whatever's best for you. I respect how pro-female you are. :D
Okay, *I* decided that I wanted to double-major in finance/engineering because [a] Economics and finance stuff REALLY interests me [b] I love math :D [c] Those jobs pay well ;) [d] Engineering is a good foundation for anything [e] I want to do something besides write so that I will have something to write ABOUT, and so that I will not be like everybody else and their mother who's like, "I want to be a wriiiiter! I will go to college for creative writing and then end up as a disaffected English teacher." Umm, and I'm not sure I've found the right one yet, but I did a lot of searches online and talked to people to find out about my top choices. Not done applying yet and all. ;)
I'm looking at Carnegie Mellon because it's good all around, I like the environment, and it's free if I go there because my parents work there *g* -- but what really attracts me is that they have a five-year engineering/economics program where I can emerge from UNDERGRADUATE school with an MBA, which just rocks. That's an excellent foundation for me, especially if I decide to change my major during college, which I am planning for because that happens to a lot of people [so I wouldn't worry if you don't know yet, you second-semester sophomore you *wink*]. I'm looking at McGill because it sounds like an awesome school, it's good for economics, it's in Montreal, and [this is really shallow but] Marie St. Jacques went there . . . I'm such a dork; she's a fictional character but she's SO COOL. >_
Time to sound smart again. *watches Almeda's opinion of her deteriorate* I'm looking at Brown because it sounds like it'd be awesome for the stuff I want to do, PLUS it's very literary-inclined [as it seems] so I'd be able to take a lot of writing courses on the side, as a minor, even if I'm not planning to major. Plus, it's an Ivy League, so getting credentials there would be good. I'm looking at Northwestern more for the graduate school Kellogg, in case I don't do CMU's program, because that's the number-one business school in the country right now and going to Kellogg for finance would rock.
I LOVE cities too. I will NOT go to college in the middle of nowhere. ;) I totally see eye-to-eye with you.
And I'd say a big school, for you also, because you're smart and unique and it's a lot easier to find people to identify with when you go to a big school. I think it'd be better for you.
I'm sorry I rambled so much; hopefully you were actually interested in the answers to those questions. :P
Honestly, I can't even remember how I picked a subject. Apart from Anthropology interests me, and I had no idea what I wanted to do, and I'm not particularly better at one of my school subjects than another, so I figured something broad-based. :)
As universities go, I just picked ones I liked the look of and hoped for the best ;)

Posted by: Ruairi Ó Coileáin on 30.01.03 13:55Dude. I just realized that the word "NOT" is in the sentence along with "I'm pretty sure" and "want to go" and "single-sex college."
*slinks back into corner*
Posted by: Nina on 30.01.03 14:56no rompe los huevos de Ruairi. I personally wouldn't like it. It just sounds painful. I only got the e-mails every freakin' day and the U. of Tampa. I think that I should wait and see what else is out there. I like the way the U. of Tampa looks though.
Posted by: Sage on 30.01.03 16:21I want to go to Ohio State...not sure what I want to major in though. Oo;;
Posted by: Laurzie on 30.01.03 16:42"Word" to 'Yan's post about college. Don't go to a single-sex school, that's really silly.
Posted by: Allan on 30.01.03 18:05PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: "I'm pretty sure I do not want to go to a single-sex college." Notice the NOT, my dear friends. N-O-T.
Posted by: Almeda on 30.01.03 19:09Oh God. This post has made me think about things that will inevitably cause stress. Hate college. I'm thinking about engineering, but I don't KNOW. GAHHHHHH. THIS IS GOING TO BUG ME NOW.
